Our Overview

Building Hope. Strengthening Communities.

For nearly three decades, Gramin Utthan Abhiyan (GUA) has been working with communities to create opportunities, strengthen local leadership, and improve the quality of life of women, children, youth, farmers, and vulnerable families across Nepal.

Founded in 1997 (2054 B.S.), GUA is a non-profit and non-governmental organization established by local community leaders who believed that every person deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, equality, and hope.

Today, GUA is recognized as a trusted community-based organization with nearly thirty years of experience in community development, humanitarian response, women's empowerment, local governance, agriculture, education, health, child protection, disaster risk reduction, environmental protection, and livelihood promotion.

Through strong partnerships with local governments, civil society organizations, development partners, and community networks, we continue to support communities in building a safer, healthier, and more inclusive future.

Our Story

Real Development Begins With Local People

"Real development begins with local people."

From a small community initiative in Bara District, the organization has grown into a respected development partner working across Madhesh Province and beyond. Throughout this journey, our purpose has remained unchanged — to stand beside communities, listen to their voices, and help them create their own future.

Every programme we implement is built on community participation. Sustainable development is achieved by working with people — not just for them. This belief has helped us build trust, long-term partnerships, and meaningful results.

Why We Exist

Removing Barriers to Opportunity

Many families continue to face poverty, discrimination, limited opportunities, unemployment, climate-related risks, disasters, and unequal access to basic services.

Women, children, youth, persons with disabilities, Dalit, Muslim, and other marginalized communities often face additional barriers that limit their participation in development and decision-making.

GUA exists to help remove these barriers — supporting communities to become stronger through knowledge, leadership, skills, and collaboration so everyone has an equal opportunity to improve their lives.

Our Approach

Communities Know Their Challenges Best

We work closely with communities from the beginning of every project — creating ownership, building confidence, and ensuring positive change continues long after a project is completed.

Understand community needs through genuine dialogue and consultation.

2
Learn

Gather knowledge and insights from local people and contexts.

3
Plan Together

Design projects with local governments, leaders, and stakeholders.

4
Act Together

5
Measure

Review progress regularly to ensure quality and accountability.

6
Sustain

Build local capacity so communities continue independently.
